Yokozuna Asashoryu, who was tied with Chiyotaikai going into today, fell to Kaio, who moved into a tie with Asashoryu for second place.
Asashoryu could have forced a winner-take-all bout tomorrow, when he faces Chiyotaikai. He must now beat the ozeki to force a tie. Kaio, meanwhile, must beat Kotomitsuki (5-9) to force a playoff.
By losing to Chiyotaikai, Miyabiyama was mathematically eliminated.
Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, is sitting out with a torn tendon in his left wrist that has been slow to heal.
