Ancient Iraq to be put in biblical perspective

Today's battleground will be put into biblical and historical perspective at a Tuesday Bible study session on "Iraq, Land of Our Beginnings."

Old Testament references to Mesopotamia, the Babylonian captivity, the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar and Abraham's homeland, Ur of Chaldees, are all set in Iraq, said the Rev. Paul Brennan, senior pastor of First Chinese Church of Christ.

"The cultural legacy from that land includes our alphabet, a lot of our geometry, tremendous contributions to civilization," said Brennan. "That's not being talked about very much these days."

He will speak at the 10 a.m. session at the church Master's Hall, 1054 S. King St. It is open to the public. A free lunch will be served.

Assisted suicide will be discussed

Whether suicide is forbidden by the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" is a topic to be explored in a discussion of the biblical history of suicide tomorrow at First Unitarian Church of Honolulu.

Roland Halpern, executive director of Compassion in Dying of Hawaii, will speak at the 10:15 a.m. service at 2500 Pali Highway. He will also talk about proposed legislation to permit physician-assisted suicide here.

St. Theresa to hold craft fair next weekend

St. Theresa Parish and School's Craft and Fun Fair next Saturday will have a variety of craft and sale items and food booths to entertain adults while children enjoy a midway of Xtreme Fun inflatable games.

The fund-raiser will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, 712 N. School St.

Christian history of America is topic

America's Christian history and heritage will be the subject of Catherine Millard, author of "The Rewriting of American History," in a 7 p.m. lecture tomorrow at Kaimuki Christian Church, 1117 Koko Head Ave.
