HILO >> Big Island Circuit Judge Riki May Amano issued a statement yesterday saying she decided to retire April 11 because she knew the Judicial Selection Commission did not intend to retain her.

"I was informed that the Judicial Selection Commission voted not to retain me; therefore, I withdrew my request for retention," Amano said in a statement released by the Judiciary.

Amano, 50, had served as a Circuit Court judge since April 12, 1993, and for a year before that as a District Court judge. She was the first full-time female judge appointed on the Big Island.

Amano would have needed the approval of the Judicial Selection Commission to be retained for another 10-year term.

"Everything happens for a reason, and I see this as an opportunity for me to move on," Amano said. "My family is excited and looking forward to my retirement. They have sacrificed a lot and this is my chance to give something back to them. I have no plans at this time other than to spend time with my family."

The Judiciary statement said Amano has worked on community projects related to female offenders and Family Court matters and has contributed to many nonprofit organizations.

Hawaii Chief Justice Ronald Moon thanked Amano for her years of service.

"We will miss her and wish her all the best," he said.
