Underground band surfaces
PIMPIN' AIN'T EASY: Fresh off a stint in Maui, the guys from Pimpbot returned to Oahu last weekend for a pair of underground shows. On Friday the band joined the Asfault Junkies, Geronimo, HoInDaWall, Middleton and Tryst for an all-ages concert on the front lawn of Mililani High. Later that evening, Tom Coleman, Chris LaPan, Mike Lewis, Fernando Pacheco and Rylan Lee made their way to the UH Campus Center for "Ladies Night" with opening act ALO.
To get pimp-slapped with what the band calls "Skrock-n-Roll," hit Anna Bannanas this Friday for their "Spring Break Kick-Off Party." Doors open at 9:30 p.m., and the No No Boys will get things started at this 21-and-over event. $5 gets you in; call 946-5190 ...
HIP-HOP TAKES center stage once again tonight at the Wave Waikiki when members of Gershwin B.L.X. show up to take part in this month's "B-Side." MCs Crag Malkovich, M.O.L. Man and Omnipresent will be in town to represent the Los Angeles-based crew that's opened for the likes of the Alkaholics, Kool Keith, the Pharcyde and Xzibit.
Throwing down for the 808 state at "B-Side" this month are DJs A2Z, Kavet the Katalyst, Oliver Twist, Slow Daddy, Sub-Zero and Syze 1. DJs G-Spot and KSM will also hold things down on the Wave's second floor with house and jungle beats; call 941-0424, ext. 12 ...
NOW IN ITS fourth year at the Hawai'i Convention Center, the First Hawaiian International Auto Show takes place this weekend from noon to 10:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. More than 30 domestic and import car makers will be on hand to display some of their best-selling models along with a few that haven't even hit showrooms yet. IT WAS DEFINITELY a sad day for the Star-Bulletin family last week when staffers learned about the death of longtime employee George Steele. Now George may not have ever gone to a party I wrote about in this column, but his bad jokes and infectious laugh always helped lighten things up in the newsroom.
