He improved to 8-1 and retained sole possession of first place.
Three others -- Hokutoriki, Tokitsuumi and Tamanoshima --remained in second place at 7-2 with victories yesterday.
Mongolian Asashoryu, the only yokozuna at the tournament, fell to Kotonowaka (4-5), to fall into a tie for fifth with seven other wrestlers.
After winning the Emperor's Cup in two consecutive tournaments, the 22-year-old Asashoryu was promoted to sumo's top rank earlier this year.
Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, is sitting out the tournament with a torn tendon in his left wrist that has been slow to heal.
