Chiyotaikai (7-0) beat Kotonowaka (3-4) by oshidashi (frontal push out). Chiyotaikai has won one tournament in his career.
Yokozuna Asashoryu, the only top-level wrestler participating in this tournament, lost to Dejima to fall into a tie for third place.
Hokutoriki improved to 6-1 after beating Kasuganishiki. Nine competitors are 5-2.
After winning the Emperor's Cup in two consecutive tournaments -- in November and January -- the 22-year-old Asashoryu was promoted to sumo's top rank earlier this year.
Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, is sitting out the tournament with a torn tendon in his left wrist that has been slow to heal.
