In the event of
newk-u-ler attack (not!)

'NOT REALLY wanting to beat a dead horse," writes Maui's Bonnie Friedman, getting out her whip, "but there was an interesting letter from a reader in this week's Parade magazine." The writer wanted to know why George W. Bush, who talks incessantly about nuclear weaponry, can't properly pronounce "nuc-lee-er," settling for "newk-u-ler." Parade gave a half-hearted defense by way of calling it a regional thing, to which Friedman would like to reply, "Horsepuckies." And I couldn't agree with her more. It would be nice if he could put nuclear weapons on the same back burner where "newk-u-ler" should be banished ...

WHILE most people would love to have their Web sites noticed by a big corporation, Kari Nettel isn't one of them. She heard from Gateway Computers that in no uncertain terms, she stop selling her cow-print computer dust cover, saying it's an infringement on their trademark. So the cow-print cover will only be available until the end of this month, but other prints -- including several with Hawaiian themes -- remain available at www.thecovercompany.com ...

Tortoise and the Hare

WELL, make that turtle, actually. It's a nearly life-sized honu carved from curly koa by Isle artist Greg Pontius. And the Hare? That would be koa craftsman Scott Hare, noted for his distinctive curly koa bowls. The work of both artists will be showcased at Martin & MacArthur's new location at Ala Moana shopping Center. The longtime retailer of fine Hawaiian furniture and gifts opens Saturday in the former Laura Ashley space at the Diamond Head end of the mall ...

TEN-time Grammy winner Bobby McFerrin celebrated his 53rd birthday this week and as a present to himself will visit Hawaii next week. The "Don't Worry, Be Happy" man will perform March 22 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall as part of the Honolulu Symphony season ... Shari Lynn, who would love to share a paragraph with McFerrin, wants people to know that she and the group Fascinatin' Rhythm haven't officially retired from showbiz just because they closed at the Hale Koa Hotel after 10 years there. They'll be performing at the Musicians' Union tonight and on one Thursday in both April and May. And Shari also sings with Del Courtney's big band with Jimmy Borges at the Blue Tropix nightclub the first Sunday of every month ...

Help me, Rhonda

IF the tourist from Japan spoke better English, she might have yelled out the title of the Beach Boys tune, but as it was, Maori singer Rhonda, came to the aid of the woman anyway. Seems a bad egg had snatched the tourist's purse and took flight. Someone yelled, "He's got a purse," and Rhonda, in Waianae for a tennis match, took off after the guy yelling, so help me, "Stop thief!" Some local boys took up the slack and captured the thief, returning the purse to its owner. And Rhonda was left wondering what she would have done had more aid not arrived and she caught up with the guy herself. She's settled down now, and will continue her performances Fridays and Saturdays at 7:45 p.m. at the Esprit Lounge of the Sheraton-Waikiki ...
