New general will
command Hawaii
Army National Guard

The state Department of Defense announced that Col. Vernon Miyagi will become the new commanding general of the 2,970-member Hawaii Army National Guard.

Miyagi is currently chief of staff of the Army Guard. He will receive his first star as a brigadier general later on this month when he replaces Brig. Gen. Clarence Agena.

Other leadership announcements made by the Department of Defense last week includes the selection of Col. Joe Chaves to replace Brig. Gen. Glen Sakagawa as commanding general of the 29th Infantry Brigade, the Hawaii Army National Guard's major combat unit, and the reappointment of retired Brig. Gen. Irwin K. Cockett, Jr. as director, Office of Veterans Services.
