Space has always been at a preminum in Japanese homes, and the industrial age has poured forth loads of space-saving gadgets and furniture designs to maximize storage use. Prior to mass-production, however, it took the skills of three different Japanese craftsmen -- the wookworking joiner, the ironsmith and the lacquer finisher -- to create the highly functional and unique chests called tansu. Each piece was approached both as a work of art and as a working piece of furniture. Form followed function to the highest degree. Tansu conservationists Jackson and Owen have pooled their considerable knowledge here and have put together what is frankly one of the coolest books I've ever seen. The historical and modern photography and artwork are first-rate, and the design is both beautiful and thoughtful. Includes an appendix on restoring antique tansu.
