Garcia surfs into Round 4
SNAPPER ROCKS, Australia >> Hawaii's Sunny Garcia squeezed past Cory Lopez 17.67-15.67 in the third round of the Quicksilver Pro yesterday.
Garcia faces Australian Mick Fanning in Round 4 today.
Not all of the Round 3 heats were completed yesterday. Andy Irons is among the competitors who will complete the third round today.
Defending Quiksilver Pro champion Joel Parkinson rebounded from a loss in Round 1 to beat Luke Munro yesterday.
"Since I've been surfing so many man-on-man heats, I've been having trouble surfing that first three-man heat," Parkinson said of his opening defeat. "It just seems like there's too many people in the water and I can't find my rhythm or anything. I'm stoked to be back in man-on-man heats and live to fight another day."
Hawaii's Shane Dorian won his heat in Round 2, but was ousted by Australian Jake Paterson in the third round.

Damien Hobgood cut back on a wave at the Quiksilver Pro yesterday in Australia.
Kalani Robb also lost in Round 3.
In the women's Roxy Pro, six Australians made it into the quarterfinals, joined by Sofia Mulanovich of Peru and Jaqueline Silva of Brazil.
The last competitors from Hawaii were eliminated on Thursday. Mulanovich ousted Keala Kennelly, Australian Chelsea Georgeson defeated Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard fell to Samantha Cornish.
Kim and Sing Chow boost Vulcans
Diana Kim belted a 3-run double in the first game and paired hits in both games as Hawaii-Hilo swept a softball doubleheader from Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday at the UHH field, 7-2 and 5-1.Kim's big hit in the first game came in the fourth inning with Hilo (7-1, 7-1 Pacific West) leading BYUH (10-11, 6-6) 3-2.
Leo Sing Chow (4-0) allowed only three hits and struck out five while walking none to get the win in the second game.
Sheldt remembered in ceremony tonight
University of Hawaii swimmer Mike Sheldt will be remembered in a ceremony in the waters off Diamond Head this evening.The public is invited. Participants are asked to bring surfboards and meet at 5 p.m. at the top of Diamond Head near the lighthouse. They will walk to the beach and then paddle out for the ceremony.
A memorial will be held in Pensacola, Fla., where Sheldt was born, next Friday. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a donation in Sheldt's memory might consider one or the other of his favorite charities: Camp Heartland (1-800-724-HOPE, 1845 Farwell Ave. Ste 310, Milwaukee, WI 53202) or Surfrider Foundation (1-800-743-SURF, PO Box 6010, San Clemente, CA 92674-6010).
Other events are being planned for Charlotte, N.C., where Sheldt's family lives and he went to Myers Park High School.
