A SHOT FOR SMALLPOX SAFETY

Public health workers received voluntary smallpox vaccinations yesterday at the state Department of Health as part of the National Smallpox Vaccination Program. Dr. Paul Effler, communicable disease chief, was injected with the vaccine. The workers are members of teams that would investigate and manage suspected cases of smallpox in the event of a bioterrorist attack.

Ash Wednesday yesterday marked the start of Lent, the Christian period for penance that lasts through the day before Easter. Luisa Balmilero, with an ashen cross on her forehead, prayed during services in Parke Chapel at St. Andrew's.
