Beachley rides into
Round 2 at Roxy Pro
in Australia

SNAPPER ROCKS, Australia >> Five-time world champion surfer Layne Beachley shined brightest in a star-studded heat to win her match in the opening round of the Roxy Pro yesterday.

The first two rounds of the women's World Championship Tournament event were completed, while the Quiksilver Pro men's event was postponed.

Beachley, 30, controlled her all-star match with 2002 World Qualifying Series winner Pauline Menczer and wildcard Lisa Andersen, winner of four WCT world titles from 1994-97.

Beachley's confident forehand carves and snaps in three-foot waves were rewarded with three eight-plus scores by the international panel of ASP judges.

"Not a bad way to start," Beachley said. "There were 10 world titles between the three of us out in the water, so I knew it was going to be tough and that I'd have to be on my game.

"I just went out there feeling really relaxed and confident, and I think I surfed that way."

Two local surfers faced off in another heat. Keala Kennelly, fourth in the world rankings, fought back to overtake former world No. 1 Megan Abubo's strong lead on her last ride. Kennelley posted the heat's best single score of 8.33.

"I couldn't find a wave with scoring potential to save my life, but right at the end a little insider stood up and I just did what I could," Kennelly said.
