Foyle, Maruoka share
weekly conference awardBrigham Young-Hawaii's Alexus Foyle and Hawaii Pacific's Leandro Maruoka share this week's Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honor.
Foyle, the reigning PacWest Player of the Year, earned the award for the third time this season, averaging 31 points in three wins that helped the Seasiders clinch the conference title. Maruoka got his second nod of the season thanks to three double-double outings in three wins for the Sea Warriors.
Foyle is second in the nation in scoring with 26.8 points per game while Maruoka is second in the PacWest in rebounding and has put together nine double-doubles this season.
Hawaii Pacific hosts UH-Hilo tomorrow and Thursday with a chance to go to the regional tournament on the line.
Foyle's Seasiders, who have already earned a spot in the regional, still hope to host the tournament but will have to sweep Chaminade in Laie Thursday and Saturday to have any hope.
Hoopii qualifies for nationals in 6 events
Saree Hoopii of Pukalani, Maui, was named the Outstanding Swimmer in the North Central Conference Championships Feb. 22 and picked up the University of Northern Colorado female Student-Athlete of the Month award this week.Hoopii set school and conference records in the 100 freestyle and the UNC mark in the 50 freestyle. She qualified for the NCAA Division II national championships in six events.
Island Lacrosse League opens season tomorrow
The four-team Island Lacrosse League kicks off its inaugural season this week with a Wednesday night opener at 7:30 at Manoa field.The 10-week season features free games on Wednesday nights at Manoa and Saturday afternoons at Cooke Field at the University of Hawaii.

McMeeken-Ruscoe is player of the week
Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Women's Player of the Week in basketball for her performance last week. The senior for the University of Buffalo led the Bulls to two conference road wins by averaging 26 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals. She shot a combined 57.1 percent (20-for-35) from the floor in the two games.McMeeken-Ruscoe, who played her first two seasons for Hawaii, was also chosen as the MAC's Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Local soccer coaches going for certification
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America will conduct a National Diploma Course March 17-23 at Kapiolani Park and the Outrigger Hotel East.The 50-hour course is designed to meet the needs of more experienced coaches, particularly those coaching at the high school level and above, or youth coaches with previous certification and a number of years working with the developing player.
Applicants must be 21 years of age, hold an NSCAA regional diploma or a USSF D license and/or five years of coaching experience at the appropriate level. A USSF C license is accepted as automatic qualification for the National Diploma course.
