Wagner recital set

The Wagner Society of Hawaii presents acclaimed mezzo-soprano Yumi Koyama in a special recital of Wagner and Bizet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Doris Duke at the Academy, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Koyama is widely known throughout the opera world, with many credits in Wagner's work, particularly in her portrayals of Ortrud in "Lohengrin" and Fricka in "Die Walküre."

While she currently makes her home in Stuttgart, Germany, where her husband is a composer, Koyama comes to Hawaii from Tokyo, where she sang the title role in Nikikai Opera's production of "Carmen."

Pianist Mary Dibbern will be her accompanist at Wednesday's recital.

Tickets are $10. Call 532-8700 for information.

Ebb & Flow Arts and Hawaii Public Radio will also offer a recital at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday, this time by double-bassist Peter Askim and pianist Robert Pollock at the Atherton Performing Arts Studio, 738 Kaheka St.

The recital will include an award-winning composition by Askim, "Eight Solitudes," and both musicians will have solo spots -- Askim with "Vital Signs" and Pollock with "Metaphor."

Admission is $17.50, $15 for public radio members. Call 955-8821 for more information.

Inside the movie biz

Chris Lee, founding co-director of the University of Hawaii's new program for Cinematic and Digital Arts, will conduct a class on "The Business Side of Film" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 15 in Krauss 012 Yukiyoshi Room on the UH-Manoa campus.

The class will provide an intensive look at the business of film production from an insider's perspective.

As the former president of production for TriStar Pictures and Columbia Pictures, Lee was the first minority and Asian American to run a Hollywood studio. During his tenure as an executive, Lee was responsible for such Academy Award-winning films as "Jerry Maguire," "Philadelphia" and "As Good as It Gets." He also supervised numerous other hits, ranging from "My Best Friend's Wedding" to "The Mask of Zorro" and "Starship Troopers."

In addition, he continues to run Chris Lee Productions, which recently produced the action thriller "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever," starring Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu, for Warner Brothers and is currently producing the big-screen version of "S.W.A.T.," starring Sam Jackson and Colin Farrell, for Columbia Pictures.
