Hawaii sweeps conference
swimming awards


ROCHESTER, Mich. >> The Hawaii men's swimming team finished second to Southern Methodist at the National Independent Conference Championships yesterday.

SMU scored 771 points to Hawaii's 676, but the Rainbows swept the awards given out at the completion of the event.

Maui product Cheyne Bloch was named the Swimmer of the Year. Mike Gowdy is Diver of the Year, Mike Anderson the top coach and Mike Brown the best diving coach.

The Rainbows won every event on the final day except the 100 freestyle.

Roberts repeats: At San Antonio, Hawaii's Maggie Roberts repeated as the WAC Diver of the Year yesterday, winning a gold medal in platform diving at the WAC meet.

Roberts also won a silver and bronze medal in the tournament, but it wasn't enough to keep the Wahine out of fourth place. Hawaii scored 487.5 points to finish behind Rice (506.5), Nevada (656) and Southern Methodist -- which scored 1,006.5 points to win the team championship.


Chang finishes second at WAC championship

NAMPA, Idaho >> Victoria Chang's performance in the 3,000 meters was the highlight for Hawaii at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships yesterday.

Chang finished second behind UTEP's Adriana Pirtea, who set a WAC record with a time of 9:45.39. Chang's time was 9:52.66 and she picked up eight of the team's 10 meet points.

UH got its other two points after finishing seventh in the distance medley. Jennifer Crumley, Lana Phillips, Jordana Whittington and Chang finished the race in 12:46.96.

Nevada won the WAC title.

Layton pounds BYUH as UH-Hilo sweeps

Hawaii-Hilo beat Brigham Young-Hawaii in both games of a softball doubleheader yesterday in Laie, 3-1 and 7-4.

Wendy Layton drove in six runs for the Vulcans in the twinbill. Kristine Kahoalii limited the Seasiders to one hit in the first game and Leo Sing Chow did the same over four innings in the second.

Calpo to play in 2003 for ECU

Carmen Calpo, who is transferring to East Carolina, has been released from her soccer scholarship by Hawaii.

She will not have to sit out next season as reported in yesterday's Star-Bulletin, according to her father, Cary Calpo.

Two named to USAT Wheelchair team

Two Hawaii residents have been named to the 2003 USA Tennis High Performance Gold Medal teams.

Selected to the women's team is Beth Arnoult of Kula, Maui. Named to the men's team is John Greer of Kaneohe.

Onosai, Sea Warriors to speak at QB Club

Former Rainbow football player Joe Onosai will join Hawaii Pacific athletic director Russell Dung and softball coach Howard Okita at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant with the program to follow at noon.
