Courtney Nakahara, 8, front, and Alexandria Carlyle, 8, from the Hanayagi Dancing Academy performed the dance Gion Kouta yesterday at Kapiolani Park Bandstand during the Heritage Fair, which was part of the 51st Cherry Blossom Festival. The event also featured mochi pounding, a bon dance and cultural displays.




TEENS GET REAL ABOUT HUNGER

More than 600,000 teens across the nation were expected to participate in this year's World Vision 30 Hour Famine, a program designed to raise awareness and money to fight hunger worldwide. Participants will go without food (consuming only liquids), learn about world poverty and perform community service projects. Youths from Olivet Baptist Church participated in the famine, which began Friday, by working at the IHS shelter for women yesterday on Kaaahi Street in Iwilei. Volunteer Rachel Hu sorted toiletries.




FEELIN' THE BREEZE

Mulder, a Pekingese owned by Cheryl Chang, sat pondering his surroundings yesterday in the cool breeze of a fan as he awaited his turn in the competition ring at the All-Breed Dog Show at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. The competition continues today from 8:30 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
