1969: Spaghetti-Irish
mayor to lead
St. Patrick’s parade

PLANS are in the works to have Mayor Frank Fasi head the St. Patrick's Day Parade, sponsored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. The mayor's about as Irish as spaghetti, but is a strong promoter of ethnic ecumenism. (March 5, 1969) ...

DR. Joseph Strode celebrated his 80th birthday as the Straub Clinic (which he joined in 1922) celebrated its 50th with a dinner at the Royal Hawaiian. He presided over the cake-cutting as his last official act in the practice of surgery and asked his colleagues whether they would insure him against malpractice charges before he lifted the knife. (March 9, 1971) ...

WATERCOLORIST Dong Kingman, stopping off at the Halekulani before heading to the Orient with his wife on a painting assignment, decided to capture for posterity the hotel's giant keawe tree, which for nearly three-quarters of a century has acted as an umbrella for Diamond Head Terrace guests. It was good timing on Kingman's part, too, because a day later, Honolulu tree surgeon Steve Nimz went to work on the keawe and trimmed it dramatically to encourage new growth. Following surgery, Nimz pronounced it in good health and predicted long life. (March 8, 1977) ...

PRINCEVILLE'S marketing director David Gilmartin postcards to say that his mainland business trip has so far been highlighted thusly: "Started with rain in L.A., continued with the rain to Phoenix, Tucson, sleet in Denver, fogged in at Dayton and now a blizzard in Chicago." Needless to say, his Kauai presentation was warmly received. (March 3, 1980) ...

WHEN 9-year-old Lael Weyenberg heard that her calabash auntie, Lisa Josephsohn, was in traction at Kuakini Hospital with a slipped disk, she called her on the phone and said, "I hear you're an attraction -- what kind?" It was one of those, "It only hurts when I laugh" routines. (March 3, 1981) ...

SIGN in the Manago Hotel in Captain Cook, Hawaii, spotted by Brian Nicol of Honolulu magazine: "In case of tidal wave. 1-Remain calm. 2-Pay your bill. 3-Run like hell." (March 5, 1982) ...

DOUBLE your pleasure, double your fun: Keith Haugen delayed his return from a business trip to New Zealand by one day just so he could celebrate his birthday twice. He spent all day Monday -- his birthday -- in Auckland, leaving there at 8:30 p.m. and arriving in Honolulu at 6:55 a.m. the same day to continue the celebration. Of course, at his age, what's to celebrate? (March 8, 1983) ...

SAX great Stan Getz had planned to join Del Courtney at the orchestra leader's tea dance Monday at the Royal Hawaiian Monarch Room, but he had to catch an early flight to the mainland. His sister, Lola, did drop by and when she requested a tune, Courtney promptly played it. He'd no doubt heard that whatever Lola wants, Lola Getz. (March 5, 1986) ...

IF anyone tries to tell you that penguins are among the more intelligent creatures in the universe, bet 'em they're not. Hilton Hawaiian village wildlife technician Robin Mattos has discovered that one of the resort's male penguins has been incubating a small coconut of late -- or trying to, at any rate. Dita, a black-footed penguin from South Africa, has apparently mistaken the coconut for the egg of his mate, Porsche, and has settled on top of it while Porsche builds a nest around him. Since penguin incubation can take up to 30 days, Dita may soon be going through a stressful time. (March 8, 1991) ...

RECENTLY opening a practice in plastic surgery is the appropriately named Vincent Nip. Now if he could just team up with Friar Tuck ... And a recent ad in the paper was for an attorney offering to counsel victims of breast implant malfunction. His name is Gregory Grab. (March 2, 1992) ...
