Brian Ching is returning to Major League Soccer, this time with the San Jose Earthquakes who made the Kamehameha and Gonzaga graduate the No. 1 pick in yesterday's supplemental draft.

The draft was for players signed by the MLS after January's SuperDraft.

Ching was drafted two years ago in the SuperDraft, the 16th pick by Los Angeles. He saw some action with the Galaxy, mostly at the end of the season, but missed six weeks with an injury.

Last year he played for the A-League Seattle Sounders and was the second-leading scorer in the league with 16 goals and eight assists. He was a four-time member of the A-League Team of the Week and an all-A-League selection.

"I'm really excited to get another chance to play in the MLS," said Ching, 25, who is with the Earthquakes on a tour of Spain.

"This time I'll be more ready physically and mentally. I really hope to be able to make an impact with San Jose."

San Jose coach Frank Yallop had this to say about Ching on the MLS web site.

"I watched Brian several times last year and I was always impressed," Yallop said. "He is one of the top scorers from the A-League and he always gives 100 percent. He is a good target man and he should add some power to our attack."

Ching has been training with the Earthquakes since the end of January.
