by Hawaii swimmersROCHESTER, Mich. >> The Hawaii men's swimming and diving team continued to set records yesterday on the third day at the National Independent Conference Championships.
Peter Thew set pool and school records in the 200 free and Baldwin graduate Cheyne Bloch set NIC and school records in the 100 breast (54.13 seconds) -- helping UH (455) to second place behind Southern Methodist (534). The meet concludes today.
Freshman Andrew Affleck began the day by winning the 400 IM in 3:54.57.
Diver Mike Gowdy placed first in the 1-meter with 353.45.
Chen qualifies for Wahine: At San Antonio, YingJuan Zhen won UH's first race of the Western Athletic Conference meet, in the 100 back, to qualify for the NCAAs.
Zhen won in 54.96, the fastest time in the WAC this season, but UH slipped to fourth place, well behind Southern Methodist.
UH's Yan Chen placed second in the 400 IM to also qualify for the NCAAs. Chen finished the 400 IM in 4:15.01, behind SMU's Alenka Kejzar (4:08.75).
The meet concludes today.
Hawaii striker Carmen Calpo is transferring to East Carolina for her sophomore year. Calpo leaves UH for East Carolina
Calpo, a three-time all-state selection from Pearl City High School, scored four goals and added six assists for the Rainbow Wahine last season.
The Rainbow Wahine were 10-9-2 a year ago.
Calpo will have to sit out a season because of the transfer.
The Lady Pirates play in Conference USA, and had their best results ever last season, finishing 11-6-4. The school is located in Greenville, N.C.
Calpo will be the second Pearl City graduate to play soccer for East Carolina. Kim Sandhoff was a Lady Pirate from 1997-2000.

UH squad competes at indoor WAC meet
NAMPA, Idaho >> Nicole Wright and Michelle Le failed to advance out of their heat in the 60-yard dash at the WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.Distance specialist Victoria Chang will try to place in races today, the final day of competition.
