DeLima will get his
licks in the Spam Jam


Hawaii IS THE Spam capital of the world with 6.7 million cans of Spam sold here every year. So it's appropriate that a Waikiki Spam Jam is scheduled April 3-5. A highlight will be the making of the world's longest Spam musubi. Presiding over the event at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center April 3 will be Spam-lover Frank DeLima. Samples of the giant Spam musubi will be given to the public. The Taste of Paradise Spam Cook Off with isle chefs will take place at the Sheraton Waikiki April 4. There's a $50 charge for the Taste. A street festival is scheduled on the final day of the Jam, with food booths and entertainment on Kalakaua Avenue ...

Chew on this: Watching the credits for the outstanding picture "The Hours," I found that the food caterer for the production was Cecil B. DeMeals. That's cool. As for "The Hours," it's amazing that the filmmaker could land Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore. It would be difficult to find a picture with three better performances by three women in one film. Each deserves an Oscar ...

California Pizza Kitchen Kahala G.M. Dave Dwyer and wife, Linda, had twins, a boy and girl, Jan. 8. In 1999 Dave pushed Kahala CPK into No. 1 in sales nationwide, a spot it still holds. Last year he was offered a regional manager's position on the mainland but turned it down because he wanted to raise his children here ...

Back to the '60s

Get out those bell bottoms, boots, colorful tops and other '60s attire for Moonlight and Magic, an Alzheimer's Association benefit, next Saturday at the Hilton Tapa Ballroom. The highlight is a Jesse Colin Young mini-concert. Things start at 6 p.m. A silent auction, free martini bar by Skyy vodka, a wine tasting by JMD Beverages and food from the Hilton are offered. Tickets are $100, $50 tax deductible; call 591-2771. Event Chair Paul Brown has named Jean Ariyoshi, Tom Moffatt and Young honorary chairs. Singer-actress Michelle Phillips will be at Brown's table. Community leader Jean Ikeda, who has Alzheimer's, will be honored ...

Reggie Sully, in town last week with Jean Dickinson, said an airlift-construction company he is involved with used a helicopter to lift a Jacuzzi to the 21st floor of The Wilshire in L.A. so Rodney Dangerfield's wife, Joan, could have it for Valentine's Day. Part of Wilshire Boulevard was closed to traffic so the copter could lift the load. Jean is Hill & Knowlton's managing director in L.A. She worked for the P.R. firm here before transferring. She and Reggie gathered with Karen Preiser, Russell Pang, Margaret Murchie and Carolyn Bosanko at Palomino last weekend ...

Happy Birthday, June

Friends of UH football coach June Jones surprised him with a birthday party at Tiki's last Saturday. Celebrating with June were former UH coach Dick Tomey and his wife, Nancy, Artie and Lissa Wilson and June's coaches ... All seats for the March 11 and 12 performances of "Spirit of the Dance" at the Hawaii Theatre are on sale, today only, for $25. The acclaimed show plays March 11-16. Regular ticket prices are $25 to $45 ...
