After the mixed crews final race at the state high school canoe paddling championships at Keehi Lagoon, the Maui teams got together and formed a tunnel for all the Maui paddlers to run through. Maria Leon of Baldwin High School ran through the tunnel. Below, Iolani racers Matt Sullivan, left, and Peter Van Lier Ribbink started the boys championship race. The Interscholastic League of Honolulu took the top three places in the boys and girls varsity races.

LULU AND FAMILY ARE SAVED

Firefighters rescue the family pet
from a devastating house fire in Mililani

Firefighters saved a dog named Lulu from a burning house in Mililani yesterday. The dog was the only one inside the home at the time of the fire at 94-406 Nui St. when it began at about 2 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Kenison Tejada. The Red Cross is assisting the family of three adults and a child who lived there. Damage was estimated at $140,000. A third of the one-story wooden house received heavy fire damage, and there was smoke damage throughout the home, Tejada said.

The Honda Civic was broadsided by a minivan yesterday morning on Valkenburgh Street under the freeway. A family involved in the accident watched as the minivan was towed from the scene. There were no serious injuries.
