Honolulu Board of Water Supply officials are reminding residents to check their homes for water leaks as part of the 13th annual Detect-a-Leak Week from Sunday to March 8.

City & County of Honolulu

"Some customers have paid hundreds of dollars in rising water and sewer bills, over a period of time, before a property leak was discovered," said manager and chief engineer Clifford Jamile.

Residents are urged to examine their pipes, indoor and outdoor faucets, shower heads, toilets, cooling and irrigation systems, and other water-using equipment.

Thousands of flyers and leak detection dye tablets will be distributed to city and state employees.

Advertisements will also remind consumers to check plumbing fixtures and instruct them in leak detection.

Free leak-detection dye tablets to help consumers check their toilets for leaks will be available at all satellite city halls and in the lobby of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply at 630 S. Beretania St. starting Sunday.

Entry forms for single-family homeowners are available to get a free leak check from the Board of Water Supply.

Forms that are available in Detect-a-Leak Week advertisements and flyers can be mailed in before March 8. Officials will select 50 names to investigate their property for leaks.

Water consumers who do not want a free leak check but would like to conduct their own leak inspection can call the Honolulu Board of Water Supply at 527-6124 and ask for free publications on how to check for leaks.
