Rags to riches
Cheap doesn't have to look it.Budget Living, a new magazine, is putting punch into pinching pennies. The glossy rag takes a hip look at bottom-line lifestyle.
Its February-March issue features how-tos on throwing an Oscar party on an indie budget, with tips from B-52 party guy Fred Schneider; what to look for in shopping for vintage wear; and the lowdown on barstools, with liberal use of store names such as consumer-friendly Wal-Mart, Old Navy, Target and Pier One.
Of course, you have to dish out $3.99 to take the tips home.
Budget Living made its national debut late last year. Jeff Apostol, inventory manager at Borders Waikele, said copies don't sit on the shelves long. Waldenbooks Kahala has a few copies left in its "Recommended Reads" area.
SoHa are you?
It's hard to avoid being noticed when you're the new kid on the block and sitting on the corner of prime property.SoHa has quietly set up shop next to Kakaako Kitchen at Ward Centre. Co-owner Shyrah Maurer, who also oversees Roxy/Quiksilver boutiques across the street, is preparing for its grand opening sometime next month.
The store opened for business last week with inviting window displays of home accessories that entice curious passers-by to step in and sneak a peek, even though the store's inventory continues to grow and change daily for the March debut.
