wins APSE writing awardSimpson received the national honor in the game story category for newspapers with a circulation of 40,000 to 100,000. Jenn Menendez of the Portland (Maine) Press Herald took first place.
The winning story by Simpson was on 100-year-old Erwin Jaskulski and his attempt to set the record in the 100 meters for 100-year-olds at the Hawaii Senior Olympics. Jaskulski ran a 36.2 to shatter the old mark of 43 seconds.
Simpson joined the Star-Bulletin staff as a sports columnist in March 2001. He was the only local APSE winner.
Hawaii swimmers break relay records
The Hawaii men's swimming team was in record form in Rochester, Mich., yesterday.The Rainbows set a National Independent Conference Championships record in the 800-meter free relay, shattering the old standard by nearly two seconds.
Peter Thew, Cheyne Bloch, Andrew Affleck and Kurt Boehm finished in 6 minutes, 30.49 seconds to break Southern Methodist's old mark of 6:32.25.
The time was also a school record, erasing the previous time of 6:32.39 set in 1985.
In the opening race of the day, UH placed second in the 200 medley relay behind the efforts of Dan Blackborrow, Bloch, Tudor Ignat and Thew. UH (1:28.56) finished behind host Oakland University (1:28.19).
The Rainbows will compete in the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 free relay and 3-meter diving events today.
Wahine third at WAC meet: The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine set a school record in the 800 free relay, and are in third place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio.
UH was third in the 200 medley and the 800 free relays. Yan Chen, Jessica Affleck, Jessica Nohara and Katie Clewett finished the 800 free relay in 7:31.14, bettering the old school mark of 7:38.72 set in 1994.
Southern Methodist is in first place with 80 points, followed by Nevada (68) and Hawaii (64).
