See old friends
at Waimanalo Carnival

DIDN'T MAKE it to the Punahou Carnival earlier this month? Don't worry -- grab that special someone and head out to the Sacred Hearts Academy Superfair or the Waimanalo Carnival this weekend for a day of food, rides, games and a healthy dose of fun.

The Sacred Hearts Academy Superfair kicks off at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning at the school and runs until 10 p.m. both tomorrow night and Saturday. Free shuttle service will be provided from Kaimuki High School, so don't worry about trying to find a parking space on Waialae Avenue.

This year's Superfair takes on a Mardi Gras theme, complete with Cajun food, masks and beads. A farmers' market and plant booth will be open as well, and Xtreme Fun Rides should keep the young ones busy. Entertainment planned during the evening tomorrow and Saturday is scheduled to include Aziel, Baba B., B.E.T., the Chief Ragga, O-Shen, Pati, Tani Lynn and T.H.C. Call 734-5058 or 791-2205 for more info ...

OUT ON THE Windward side, the annual Waimanalo Carnival is the big social event for families that live on that side of the island. Friends that live out there tell me the best time to catch up with people you haven't seen is to hang out at the carnival -- folks come out of the woodwork for this one every year.

The fun starts tomorrow night at 6 p.m. and lasts until midnight at Waimanalo Beach Park; things get started at 11:30 a.m. the rest of the weekend and last until midnight on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday. The E.K. Fernandez midway of rides will be set up, with $15 wristbands good for unlimited rides being sold at the carnival on Sunday. Check out www.ekfernandez.com or http://www.friendsofwaimanalo.com/carnival.html for details on how to get a wristband good for unlimited rides tomorrow and Saturday, too.

Among the live entertainment scheduled for the Waimanalo Carnival: B.E.T., Sean Na'au'ao and the Next Generation on Friday; Heart & Soul, Koa'uka, Three Plus and Ten Feet on Saturday; and Kapena and Na Palapalai on Sunday. Call 259-6774 ...

SATURDAY NIGHT also marks the start of "Juicy" over at the Maze Nightclub in Waikiki. This week, the party also serves as the official wrap-up for the Hansen's Energy Pro surf contest. Among the turntable wizards who will spin in one of the Maze's three rooms are DJs Billy G, Daniel J, Dawn, G-Spot, PSI, Slow Daddy and Taharba. And don't forget to check out the "Hip-hop Temple" with DJs Epic, Jedi and Sonique. Call 368-1666 ...
