Jones, saimin and
a scattered mind

CATTERED shots, scattered mind:

>> June Jones is an excellent coach. UH should sign him. Now.

(I love the idea, raised in Sunday's Letters to the Editor, that there should be a special bank account created so that anyone could just come in and make a deposit toward the coach's salary. In fact I loved the idea so much I took the liberty of setting it up myself. Please pay no attention to the fact that the account is in my name.)

>> Hawaii is the best situation for Jones. He should sign. Now.

>> Both sides are on the clock in this one.

>> There is no stopping the Riley Wallace haircut. A team full of Riley Wallace haircuts would be unbeatable.

I'm glad somebody finally realized this.

>> I said it last season and Saturday, at Kent State, it proved true again: Hawaii's chances heading into basketball's March Madness hinge on Carl English finding the right hairstyle.

>> Once again, actual facts get in the way of a great fantasy. Jerry Glanville at UH would have been a lot of fun. He wouldn't even have had to coach anything. Jones should hire him as assistant head coach in charge of sound bites, public speaking and interviews.

But then, there can be only one Man in Black per program.

>> Is it too late to be wrong about Bracket Buster Saturday? Yes, most of the teams involved were already out of the big picture, rendering the day's concept moot. But the games themselves were great.

>> Is something a big event just because ESPN says it is? It seems so. It was hard not to get swept up in all the excitement. Well, except for that two-hour window of America's Cup sailing.

>> This, from Tom Shatel of the Omaha World-Herald on Creighton's Kyle Korver, the guy who lit up Fresno State for 27:

"Korver's jumper is so sweet and pure that, when he misses, it's the basket's fault."

>> OK, OK, he's convinced me this season. English can shoot jumpers. But it's nice to finally see him finally putting the ball on the floor and pogo-sticking to the hoop with abandon, the way he used to.

If you're going to be a pro, you should be able to take these WAC guys off the dribble.

>> For Mike Trapasso, the Wichita State series probably couldn't have sent a better message to Rainbow baseball fans: unlimited optimism, patience still required.

>> Sports photo of the week: WSU coach Gene Stephenson, laid up in the dugout, scarfing saimin.

>> Admit it. One of you out there has started a "countdown to Fieldturf."

>> Imagine losing to another team six straight times. With another win Thursday, the basketball 'Bows would be on the brink of becoming Tulsa's BYU.

>> I miss the orange in the Rainbow baseball ensemble. I miss the "s" at the end of Wahine.

>> But then, I won't be happy until the "Rainbow-Tique" starts stocking Gary Allen throwback jerseys.

Or the UH football team starts wearing them.
