Berman, former star of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, is one of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts 2002 Individual Artist fellows in the performing arts. She has utilized the award to travel to the mainland to work with various choreographers in expanding her repertory as a solo dance artist.
Most recently, she performed with the American Repertory Dance Company, directed by Bonnie Oda Homsey, another Hawaii native and former Martha Graham dancer. ARDC commissioned Robert Battle, formerly of the Parsons Dance Company and now the director of Battleworks, to choreograph a solo for Berman earlier this year. ARDC will be in residency at Kalani Honua on the Big Island in June.
Berman will work in February with Hernando Cortez, a fellow former Taylor dancer and recently appointed director of the Cleveland Repertory Project. Cortez's new solo work for Berman will be premiered during the miniperformance event.
Immediately following the class and performance, Peter Rockford Espiritu, director of Tau Dance Theater, will hold auditions for choreographers and performing artists who would like to participate in "Ladies' Night Out," an evening celebrating female artists in Hawaii. Be prepared to show a complete work or one in progress.
For more information, call Berman at 226-1429 or Espiritu at 255-8245.
