Court seeks advocates
for children at risk

Star-Bulletin staff

The Maui Family Court is recruiting volunteers to represent children who are victims of child abuse or neglect.

The next Volunteer Guardian Ad Litem training program will be held in March. The dates for the five-day training program will be determined when enough people sign up, are screened and available for the training. Those who complete the program are appointed by the court to represent the child's best interests in a child abuse or neglect case.

A VGAL must keep the court informed about the child and serve as fact-finder, advocate and monitor for children in need. Volunteers must be at least 20 years old and able to spend between four and 30 hours a month working on a child's case.

Anyone interested can call Marsha Yamada at 244-2729.
