Glanville not a candidate
for UH job

There won't be tickets left for Elvis at Aloha Stadium this fall.

Hawaii football coach June Jones said yesterday there is no truth to a rumor circling the NFL combine in Indianapolis that Jerry Glanville is under consideration to become UH's defensive coordinator.

"It's unbelievable how these things get started," Jones said yesterday. "I have not talked to him (about the job) and do not plan to talk to him."

Several sources had indicated that Glanville (who does not have a coaching job now) would be interested in the position, and Jones, who worked for Glanville in the NFL, might want to hire him.

Jones was assistant head coach when Glanville was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 1990 to 1993, and succeeded him as head coach in 1994. Jones was also quarterbacks coach under Glanville with the Houston Oilers in 1987 and 1988.

The outspoken and colorful Glanville -- known for his penchant for car racing and leaving game tickets for the deceased Elvis Presley -- worked as a pro-football analyst for FOX and HBO until last year.

Kevin Lempa, defensive coordinator for UH the past three seasons, resigned two weeks ago to become defensive backs coach at Boston College.

Jones, who returns from a two-week vacation tomorrow, declined to comment yesterday on who might fill the opening.

"We'll probably wait until after spring practice," he said.
