LCC to honor
3 culinary veterans

Three veterans of the local restaurant scene will be recognized for their formidable careers in the industry when Leeward Community College inaugurates a Hawaii Culinary Hall of Fame in April.

To be recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards are: Martin Wyss, chef-owner of the beloved Swiss in Niu Valley from 1982 until his retirement in 2000; and Michel Martin, who opened Hawaii's first French restaurant, Chez Michel, in 1942 in Wahiawa. He also opened Michel's at the Colony Surf and Chez Michel at Eaton Square.

Receiving the Outstanding Educator Award is Jimmy Sueyoshi, a longtime restaurant chef who turned to teaching at LCC in 1971, retiring 18 years later.

The inductees will be recognized at two LCC events, a five-course French dinner April 11 featuring dishes of their design that they will teach culinary students to prepare, and the annual Taste of the Stars event May 3.

Tickets are $60 for the French dinner and $100 for Taste of the Stars, which features dishes from an all-star selection of 20 Oahu chefs. VIP tables that include special service are available.

Call 455-0298 or 455-0475 for reservations.
