WAILUKU >> Pearl City girls soccer coach Frank Baumholtz III hopes his "real" team shows up today in the Meadow Gold Girls State Soccer Championships at War Memorial Stadium. Oahu teams advance
as state girls soccer opensBy Dana McBratney
Special to the Star-BulletinThe Chargers, who finished second in the OIA, got a goal from Kari Tanimoto with 17 minutes gone in overtime for a 3-2 victory over Hilo in the first round of the state tournament last night.
In other first-round games, Kahuku beat Kealakehe 4-3, Kalaheo topped Kauai 2-1 and Aiea beat King Kekaulike 1-0.
Pearl City (12-1-1) takes on third-seeded Baldwin at 7:30 tonight. In the other quarterfinal games, Punahou plays Kahuku at 1:30 p.m., Mililani squares off against Kalaheo at 3:30 p.m. and Hawaii Prep plays Aiea at 5:30 p.m.
Baumholtz, who shares head-coaching duties with Tracee Kono, was just glad his team was still playing in the championship bracket after the Chargers' game.
"We just didn't play well in the first half," Baumholtz said. "We played the same way when we played Mililani (Pearl City lost 3-2 in the OIA title game in overtime)."
Hilo outshot Pearl City 6-2 in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead at halftime. Another shot went over a wide-open net.
"Our defense was letting them receive the ball and on the offense, every ball we played was up in the air," Baumholtz said.
The first Vikings goal came 30 minutes into the game when Rachel Clevenger knocked it in. Rodlyn Segawa gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead when she drilled a 25-yard shot into the top of the net. Pearl City had only two shots on goal in the first period, while Hilo had six.
"We told them at halftime that we had to get everything on the ground and we switched our defense," Baumholtz said. "We went to a man-to-man with three fullbacks instead of four and everything was on the ground. That changed the tempo and Hilo was protecting its lead. They did not attack at all."
Tanimoto finally got Pearl City on the scoreboard with a rebound shot at 52:57 in the game. Chelsea Arakawa tied the game for Pearl City at 62:10.
In a driving rain with wind gusts at its back, Pearl City put the pressure on Hilo from the start of the overtime. Tanimoto was able to sneak the ball past the Hilo defense and into the net off a corner kick by Lauren Maeshiro.
Pearl City dominated the second half. The Chargers had 19 shots on goal to Hilo's one. Hilo's Joella Teasley had nine saves in the game, eight in the second period.
The Chargers have played Baldwin twice the season, losing 1-0 and winning 1-0.
"If my team shows up tomorrow, we will give Baldwin a run," Baumholtz said. "It should be a good game."
Kahuku 4, Kealakehe 3: Krisha Kai, who has signed with the University of Hawaii, scored all of the Red Raiders' goals.
The Waveriders jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Laura Franke three minutes into the game. Kai squared the game at 1 at the 30:52 mark to leave the game knotted at halftime.
Kai's second goal put Kahuku up 2-1 four minutes into the second period and Jessica Parker tied it 10 minutes later for Kealakehe. Olivia Heslinga gave Kealakehe a 3-2 lead at 57:32, but Kai scored at 64:43 to tie the score and got the game winner at 71:47.
Kalaheo 2, Kauai 1: Anela Gonzales headed a ball into the net late in the second period to lift the Mustangs past the Red Raiders.
Holly Iloreta of Kauai broke a scoreless tie in the second period when she scored off a penalty kick. Tina Garcia tied the score at 1 with an easy goal when the Kauai goalkeeper was caught out of net.
Kauai had 19 shots on goal to Kalaheo's eight.
Aiea 1, King Kekaulike 0: Andrea Fukuhara of Aiea nailed a penalty kick into the upper left corner to give Aiea the first-round victory over King Kekaulike.
It was the second round of penalty kicks. The first round ended 4-4. Fukuhara was the sixth kicker in the sudden-victory competition.
Aiea goalie Diana Shiroma, set up Fukuhara's kick by blocking the kick of King Kekaulike's Jadelyn Yip.
Aiea faces Baldwin at 7:30 tonight in the quarterfinal game.
