A preview of movies opening this weekend: [Preview]
"Dark Blue" >> Ron Shelton ("Bull Durham" and "Tin Cup") tries his hand directing this story about a tough, tortured L.A. cop (Kurt Russell) who's trying to solve a quadruple homicide in the few days in April 1992 just before the Rodney King verdicts are announced. Ving Rhames co-stars as the police official threatening to end the cop's vigilante justice meted out on the streets. (R)
"Gods and Generals" >> It's a 3 1/2-hour Civil War re-enactment! This historical saga is the prequel to 1993's "Gettysburg," with writer-director Ron Maxwell behind the camera once again. The movie concerns the early years of the Civil War and how the campaigns unfolded from Manassas I to the Battle of Fredericksburg. Jeff Daniels reprises his role as Col. Joshua Chamberlain, and Stephen Lang plays Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, the new film's focus. (PG-13)
"The Life of David Gale" >> Kevin Spacey stars in the title role of an anti-capital punishment crusader who ends up on death row himself for the rape and murder of a fellow activist. Kate Winslet is the journalist chasing an exclusive interview with him, but soon realizes that this assignment is more than she bargained for and that his life is in her hands. (R)
"Old School" >> The team behind "Road Trip" goes back to college with the story of a heartbroken sad sack (Luke Wilson) who teams with two marriage-whipped buddies (Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn) to form a frat house open to all, in order to recharge their smothered masculinity. The realities of their past lives, however, soon catch up with their now wild lifestyles. (R)
Sneak Preview:
"Bringing Down the House" >> Steve Martin and Queen Latifah star as the most unlikely couple of people ever to meet through the Internet -- he's a respectable middle-class guy and she's a former prisoner. When they finally meet, she wreaks havoc on his comfortable life. (PG-13)
