Wahine beat No. 3 Cal
LAS VEGAS >> Melissa Coogan shut out No. 3 California 1-0 yesterday, allowing Hawaii to close out the UNLV Softball Desert Classic with a .500 record.
The Rainbow Wahine, who went 3-2 in the tournament, improved to 5-5 while dropping the Golden Bears, also 3-2 in the event, to 10-2.
Coogan, a sophomore, did not strike out or walk a batter, giving up only four hits, one to Baldwin product Kaleo Eldredge, who had Cal's only extra-base hit -- a double.
The Rainbow Wahine only got one hit in the game to send Jen Deering (4-1) to her first loss of the year. Deering only lasted 2 2/3 innings because she walked four of the 13 batters she faced.
One of those, Noelle Izumi, scored the run for Hawaii in the third inning.
Kelly Anderson then settled down to throw 4 1/3 perfect innings for the Golden Bears.
Hawaii left four runners on base, while Cal stranded five.
Hawaii will stay in Las Vegas to play Southern Utah and Nevada-Las Vegas today.
Wichita State sweeps UH-Hilo
KAILUA-KONA >> Wichita State opened its season with a doubleheader sweep of UH-Hilo (3-19) yesterday -- 14-5 and 4-3.Nick McCoola started his season perfect, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and five RBIs. Brandon Hall followed him in the order, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Mark Johnson drove in the telling run in the fifth inning of the second game with a single. Mike Dennison shut out the Vulcans for the last two innings to give the Shockers the win.
The series continues with a 1:30 p.m. game today, a 10 a.m. doubleheader tomorrow and an 11 a.m. game Wednesday, all at Simmons' Field.
