Mililani advance in OIA

Simeon Tavares hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2.2 seconds left to lift Mililani past Kahuku 42-41 in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs.

Trailing 41-39, Mililani called a timeout to set up the final play.

"We ran an inbounds play from the corner and the boys were smart enough to make the right pass," Trojans coach Michael Coito said.

"At the final timeout there was a little bit of chaos. The kids kept working to get open because Kahuku shut down our first options."

Brandyn Fidel made the pass in to a wide open Tavares, who moments earlier had missed two free throws and was 0-for-4 from the line in the game.

"He missed a few (3-point) shots prior to that," Coito said. " He told me he was due. He extended his high school career with that shot.

"We didn't play very well and we still won. I'm grateful for that. Sometimes it's good to be lucky."

Mililani (8-3) travels to Eastern Division champion Roosevelt (9-1) tonight at 6:30.
