An Oahu grand jury has indicted a Honolulu police officer on a charge of second-degree theft.

Robert Fu, 44, an officer in the Narcotics-Vice Division for the past four years, was charged Wednesday with taking property belonging to a John R. Nix on Aug. 6 that was valued at more than $300.

Fu has been with the department for 10 years. He has been stripped of his gun and badge and has been assigned to desk duty, Michelle Yu, police spokeswoman, said yesterday.

Police Chief Lee Donohue was not available for comment.

A bench warrant has been issued for Fu's arrest, but he is likely to turn himself in. Bail has been set at $1,000.

Details and circumstances of the theft were not available, but sources say it stemmed from a drug raid.

Prosecutors cannot talk about the facts and evidence in the Fu case because it is part of an ongoing investigation, said Jim Fulton, of the city Prosecutor's Office.

Nix, 50, has a criminal history that dates to 1982, according to state records. He has been convicted 18 times, 14 of those for theft with three of them felonies. He has had his parole revoked twice, in 1999 and 2000.

Second-degree theft is a felony punishable with five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
