Students host
bargain brunch

How much did your last brunch cost -- $35, $40, $45?

Sunday, enjoy a $10 brunch, with all the usual pastries and breakfast meats, hot cakes and carved-to-order ham, even omelette stations.

The Spring Scholarship Brunch at Leeward Community College is a multipurpose event -- a learning opportunity for the high school culinary students who'll help do the cooking, a teaching opportunity for the LCC culinary students who will be their guides, a fund-raising opportunity for the school and an eating opportunity for everyone who takes advantage of the offer.

On top of all that: entertainment by kumu hula Vicky Holt Takamine and a craft fair.

Public high schools from throughout the west side -- Aiea, Campbell, Pearl City, Moanalua, Nanakuli, Waianae and Waipahu -- will participate.

The proceeds provide scholarships for select high school students who go on to LCC's culinary program. All the schools receive at least $1,000 each, to pass on to the students according to their own criteria.

The brunch takes place 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the LCC cafeteria. Tickets are $10 presale; $12 at the door. Children 6 and under pay $5. Call 455-0687 or 455-0300.

Into the imu

Meanwhile, high school students on the other side of the island are preparing a set of imus, in which the public is invited to park turkeys, pork butts and other trays of food overnight.

Reserve space in Kailua High School's imus by Friday. The food goes in Feb. 21 and comes out the next morning. Food to be imu-ed must be packed in a 13-by-21-inch aluminum pan, thawed, seasoned and wrapped in foil. About 100 trays can be accommodated.

Cost is $10 per tray, benefiting the school's cultural and environmental education program. Mail or deliver checks to Kailua High School, attention Todd Hendricks, 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua 96734. Include your name and telephone number. Then bring food to the school between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. on the 21st.

You will be contacted only if all the imu space is sold out. For information, page Hendricks at 299-5347.
