Free boating course leads to certification
The Kaneohe flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold a boating course at Kalaheo High School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, beginning today through March 31.The certified course meets Coast Guard, state and national boating law administrators requirements. Those who earn certification will be eligible for boat insurance discounts, a one-year free membership in Boat/Us and a discount on marine safety products. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The course covers federal equipment requirements, boat handling, navigation aids, federal navigation rules, coastal navigation, radio communications, engines, knots and lines, weather and more.
Registration is limited. The manual, student study guide and exams will cost $45 for those who register in advance, and $55 at the door.

Workshop will address foster care, adoption
Casey Family Programs will present a free workshop on foster care and adoptive families from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at 1465 Ulupii St., Kailua.Speaking will be Dan Hughes, a psychologist who specializes in attachment problems, foster care and adoptions.

Waipahu man indicted for alleged sex assault
An Oahu grand jury indicted a 39-year-old Waipahu man last week for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor.According to the indictment filed Tuesday, Leuii Mamea sexually assaulted an underage girl in his home from about July 25, 2001, to Jan. 24, 2003.
Mamea faces two counts of sexual assault in the first degree -- one count when the victim was 13, and the second count when she was 14.
Windward group plans visit to Kahuku farms
The Windward Ahupua'a Alliance will take a field trip to Kahuku agriculture and aquaculture farms Saturday. Participants will carpool from Waimanalo, Kailua, Kaneohe and Kaaawa at 8 a.m. and leave Kahuku at 2 p.m.

Discarded metal drum holds toxic chemicals
State health officials said a 55-gallon drum that was discarded Thursday near an open lot in Waianae was filled with solvents, which are toxic. It was in the same spot where four drums of motor oil and other combustible liquids were left last June.The drum was left near the intersection of Maiuu Road and Mahinaau Road.

Man tries to sell stolen dirt bike to its owner
A man was arrested yesterday when he tried to sell a stolen dirt bike to its owner, police said.The 23-year-old suspect was arrested at the Pearl City Shopping Center for investigation of detaining stolen property and second-degree theft.
The dirt bike owner, a 41-year-old man, notified police about an arranged meeting at the shopping center, police said. When the suspect arrived with a dirt bike with an altered identification number, waiting officers arrested him.
The suspect was released later pending further investigation.

Guards at DFS Galleria stop alleged shoplifter
Police arrested a 28-year-old man Saturday after he allegedly stole merchandise from the DFS Galleria in Waikiki.Store security guards witnessed the suspect removing items from the shelf and putting them into a Macy's bag about 6 p.m., police said.
The 28-year-old man, described as homeless, left the store without paying for the items, police said. Security guards stopped him and also found drugs on him, police said.
Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of theft in the second degree, promoting dangerous drugs in the third degree, and drug paraphernalia.

Police arrest 2 men in attempted car theft
Police arrested two men yesterday after they allegedly attempted to steal a car in Hawaii Kai.A 55-year-old woman called police after a car alarm was set off about 3 a.m. Police located two men, 18 and 19, nearby. One man was carrying a knife wrapped in a shirt, police said.
Police said the suspects had a cellular phone that was taken from the vehicle.
Police arrested both men on suspicion of auto theft, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and carrying a deadly weapon. The case is pending investigation.
