Hawaii Council rejects plan for fire headquarters

HILO >> A Hawaii County Council committee rejected Mayor Harry Kim's proposal to buy a former restaurant and convert it to a headquarters for the county Fire Department.

Kim wanted to borrow $2.5 million to buy the former Sun Sun Lau restaurant property, using $1.5 million to acquire the four-acre site and $1 million for renovations.

Councilman Curtis Tyler of North Kona last week called the proposal a "very large black hole that will cost us many more millions of dollars than what's being estimated here."
