1970: Isle doctor is
Hubert Humphrey’s
guest in Miami

LOCAL physician and sportsman Dr. Richard You writes from Miami Beach where he was the guest of Hubert Humphrey at the National Democratic Banquet honoring former President Harry Truman. Dr. You, who was seated with Sen. Ted Kennedy at dinner, put on his prediction cap and opined that "Sen. Kennedy looks well and should win re-election as U.S. Senator. Humphrey will win election as U.S. Senator from Minnesota this year and will win the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Presidency in 1972 with Sen. Muskie a strong second." So much for crystal balling -- Dr. You adds that Sammy Davis Jr. & Don Rickles ended the banquet with a great show, "although a little off-color at times." (Feb. 10, 1970) ...

AMERICAN Express has a magazine-style travel brochure out called "The Europe Book," and inside John Q. Landers discovered an amusing ad for "The Hawaii Book," which reads as follows: "America's 50th state is unlike any other. An island paradise of wild orchids & palms. Coconuts & pineapples. Hula dancers & outdoor luas." Shouldn't our local plumbers complain? (Feb. 19, 1971) ...

THE voice on the lead story in Walter Cronkite's CBS-TV news program nationwide last night was that of KGMB's Bob Sevey, reporting on the returning POWs stepping on U.S. soil. CBS radio news had better watch it, however. We heard one reporter yesterday morning (on KHVH's world news roundup) say the returnees were "heading stateside," when they leave Hawaii. That old World War II term should be shelved permanently. (Feb. 15, 1973) ...

SIBLINGS of the famous showed up together at John Wilbur's house last week for a Ted Kennedy rally. One was Ted's nephew, Michael Kennedy, son of Ethel and the late Bobby Kennedy, and with him was pretty Vicky Gifford, daughter of sportscaster Frank Gifford. The last time Michael visited here he was traveling with Kyle Gifford, Vicky's brother, prompting one wag to mention that his choice of companions is improving. (Feb. 10, 1979) ...

Meanwhile, Kelly Hu, winner of the Miss Teen-USA contest nationally, celebrated her 17th birthday this week at Nick's Fishmarket, along with her mother and contest organizers. Unless the legislature passes a new law, she'll be able to toast her next birthday with champagne, but don't bet on it. (Feb. 15, 1986) ...

CELEBRATING not just Chinese New Year at the Mauna Lani but 11 Oscar nominations for his film, "The Color Purple," is director Steven Spielberg with Amy Irving and their son, Max. One of the great perplexities in Hollywood is why "Color Purple" got so many awards and its creator, Spielberg, was stiffed in the "best director" category. (Feb. 10, 1986) ...

ONE of the funniest incidents at the Hawaiian Open this year occurred when a Burns security guard stopped a man about to enter the press tent. "I'm sorry sir," he told the man, "but you have to have proper identification to get in here." Flashing his PGA money clip, Lee Trevino quipped, "Is this ID enough?" Apparently the guard isn't much a golf fan. (Feb. 15, 1988) ...

I HAD a chance to chat with football great O.J. Simpson, here with a Hertz contingent for the Open, and he was happy to have a chance to put that spat with his wife in proper perspective. He and wife Nicole, who accompanied O.J. here with their two kids, had a fight at 3:30 a.m. on New Year's Eve and somehow it was leaked to the press about a month later. "The next day things were fine," said O.J. "We put it behind us. We even had friends over for dinner a few days later. When the thing came out in the paper, they called up -- they couldn't believe it." In any case, the Simpsons are sorry it happened. It sounds like one of those, "Show me a man who hasn't had a fight with his wife and I'll show you a newlywed" situations. (Feb. 13, 1989) ...

ONE of the better examples of "Hawaiian time" -- that's what Will Rellahan calls the Star-Bulletin story he read last Friday. The story began, "The start of today's round of the Hawaiian Open was delayed one hour, from 7:21 a.m. till 9:21 a.m. because of the rain." (Feb. 13, 1989) ...
