Ceramic Valentines

The Toshiko Takaezu Ceramics Studio hosts its annual Valentine's Day ceramics sale through 9 p.m. today and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow.

A portion of the sale proceeds will benefit the YWCA at 1040 Richards St., where the studio is housed. Call 538-7061.

Palace experts speak

The "Experts at the Palace" historic-preservation lecture series begins today and runs through mid-March with a distinctly military flavor this year.

The free talks take place at noon Thursdays in the Old Archives Building on the 'Iolani Palace grounds. For information, call 956-9546 or 956-8570.

This year's subjects are:

>> Today: "Pearl Harbor from the Skies: Accounts of Japanese Pilots" with historian John DeVirgilio.

>> Feb. 13: "Taking Flight: The Military Aviation Museum of the Pacific" with directors Allan Palmer and Clint Churchill.

>> Feb. 20: "Preservation Opportunities (and Challenges) of Ford Island, Pearl Harbor" with Historic Hawaii director David Scott.

>> Feb. 27: "Northwest Hawaiian Waters Shipwreck Sites" with Hans Van Tilberg, University of Hawaii maritime archaeology.

>> March 6: "Preserving the Last Pearl Harbor Veteran: The Saga of the Tugboat Hoga" with historian Burl Burlingame.

>> March 13: "The Japanese Midget Sub: Report of the Discovery" with Hawaii Undersea Research laboratory operations director Terry Kerby and biologist Chris Kelly.

'Giselle' corps sought

Ballet Hawaii will hold auditions for "Giselle" from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 15.

The auditions are for advanced dancers who should bring pointe shoes. Ballet Hawaii artistic director Pamela Taylor-Tongg is looking for corps de ballet, demi soloists and soloists to complement the production's stars, Wu Haiyan and Li Jun, solo dancers from the National Ballet of China and award winners at the 7th USA International Ballet Competition.

Dancers should pre-register by calling 521-8600. Non-ballet Hawaii auditioners will need to take the "Giselle" class, at $15.

The ballet will be staged May 3 and 4 at Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Learning can be fun

Feb. 15 is the deadline to apply for Leeward Community College's study abroad travel tours this summer. The three- to six-credit programs are:

>> Japanese language in Nagoya, Japan: June 26 to July 28

>> Spanish language in Havana, Cuba: July 2 to Aug. 3

>> Spanish in Salamanca, Spain: May 22 to June 30

>> Art history: In London, Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome: May 29 to June 15

>>Botany in the Brazilian Amazon and the Gran Sabana of southern Venezuela: July 25 to Aug. 17.

Participants must be 18. Call 455-0327 for application forms. Costs are approximately $3,400 per person, including airfare, room and two meals daily.

Kala'i Miller, the host of the ABC Family cable reality series "The Last Resort," will be a guest on Wayne Brady's talk show tomorrow morning (9 a.m. weekdays on KGMB). The former "Baywatch Hawaii" star hosts the series that takes a glimpse into the lives of couples in crisis who leave all distractions behind to concentrate on fixing their relationships through counseling sessions and physical challenges.

"The Last Resort" airs locally at 6:30 p.m. Mondays.
