Reggae master Marley’s
life is celebrated

HAD HE lived to see the year 2003, Bob Marley would have turned 58 years old today. Widely recognized as one of the main people responsible for the worldwide rise in popularity that reggae music enjoyed in the '70s, Marley toured places like Japan, Australia and the United States before succumbing to cancer in 1981.

Two events take place this week to celebrate Marley's life -- one goes off tonight at Kapono's and the other happens Saturday at the Hawaiian Hut. Starting at 10 tonight, the "Bob Marley Birthday Bash" features entertainment by B.E.T., Binghi-T, Butch Helemano, Humble Soul, Sean Ka'awa, Haile Ras-Tafari and THC. DJs Liloa and Loriel will also be on hand to keep things moving between sets at this 18-and-over party ...

OVER AT THE Hawaiian Hut on Saturday, the "Bob Marley Birthday Celebration" gets under way at 10:30 p.m. (doors open at 9:30). Maacho and Cool Connection will join Ooklah the Moc to represent Hawaii's homegrown talent, while Los Angeles-based reggae artist April Wheeler brings some love for Bob from the mainland. Wheeler is described by promoters as "the Chaka Khan of Reggae," and has toured and/or recorded with stars like Gregory Issacs, Shinehead and Bunny Wailer ...

AND IF YOU can wait a couple of weeks to celebrate, the "Superstars of Reggae Tour" will touch down on Oahu on Feb. 21 before moving on to the Big Island and Kauai the following days. Bob's son Ky-Mani Marley will be in town for the shows to help promote his latest single, "Who the Cap Fit," which appears on the album "Reggae Nation Island Movement," next to tracks by Marty Dread, Natural Vibes and Slightly Stoopid. Inner Circle is also scheduled to perform with the younger Marley on Feb. 21. Tickets for the show range from $18-$30; call 591-2211 for more info ...

THIS SUNDAY NIGHT at Wave Waikiki, the first in a series of four events known as "Elemental" gets started. This week's "gathering of forces" is supposed to focus on the first phase, Earth, and features the Bassment Addicts' Necron 99 along with the entire Sisters in Sound crew and DJs H-Bomb and Monkey. MC Pupil will host an open mic session until 11 p.m.

Doors open at 9 p.m. for "Elemental," and be sure to bring a canned food item along with you to the club for $2 off the $7 cover at this 18-and-over party. Call 941-0424, Ext. 12 for details ...
