Moanalua gets
Mililani again

Star-Bulletin staff

Moanalua will have a chance to end Mililani's Oahu Interscholastic Association winning streak today in the OIA playoffs -- for the third consecutive season.

The Trojans, who have won 60 straight league games, have beaten the Menehunes in the quarterfinals the past two years. In 2001, Miki Asamura and Johnna Rowland combined on an 8-0 shutout. Last year, Asamura struck out 10 in pitching a two-hitter in Mililani's 1-0 win.

Moanalua put itself in position to face Mililani again by beating Campbell 6-2 yesterday in the opening round of the OIA playoffs.

"We feel like we're as good as anybody else," Moanalua coach Mitch Matsumoto said. "When we first started the season one of our priorities was making the state tournament. After the last game of the regular season we changed that to make it our only priority.

"Last year we lost 1-0 on an error. This whole season we remembered that. If we didn't make that error we'd still be playing."

Mika Tanji tossed a four-hitter and Courtney Adaro homered in the first and later doubled for the Menehunes.

Jovanna Kealohi hit a two-run blast for Campbell in the fourth to cut Moanalua's lead to 4-2, but Adaro doubled home two runs in the fifth to seal the Menehunes' win. Adaro drove in four runs in the game.

"All we've got to do (against Mililani) is hit the ball like we did today," Matsumoto said.

Matsumoto said the Menehunes have already faced the top pitcher in the state -- Kailua's Courtney Kessell.

"We faced Kailua earlier and lost 2-1," he said. "Now the bats are coming around."

Mililani has won four consecutive OIA championships.

The Hurricanes pounded out eight hits, as Valana Manuma, Austi Paris and Jasmin Yoro had two hits each in the middle of the order. Manuma had a pair of doubles and knocked in two runs. Ebaloaroza also had two runs batted in from the leadoff spot.
