In The Mix
3 clubs revive
the ’80s era
IT LOOKS LIKE the '80s are still a popular decade for a few local promoters: Three parties with an old-school theme were in the mix last weekend.
On Thursday, Pipeline Cafe held its second "Retro Night" at the club. There was a good crowd when I stopped by last month, and I liked how a few tables got moved around to give the room a different vibe. Two-dollar pupus are available all night, too.
The '80s were in full effect Friday at JC's Bar and Grill in Waikiki as DJs DanSIN and Phoenix played host at "Club B-Sides." These "Original Goths," as they call themselves, promised to play "the '80s music that was really going off in the L.A. underground scene back in the day." Funny, because there are a bunch of songs on a website published by these guys that are still getting play on local radio stations.
And on Saturday, White Dragon Productions brought the old school to Aloha Tower Marketplace with "Club 80/90" at Waterfront Cafe and Cabaret. Sexy "Shadow Dancers" are the main attraction, along with '80s and '90s club hits and free pupus served up all night. This 21-and-over party also features $2 kamikaze shots and $1 jello shots for those of you who want to relive your glory days ...
A FEW TICKETS are still available for this week's Jimmy Eat World concert at Pipeline Cafe. The band returns to the islands after performing in Australia, just as they stopped off last year after shows in Japan. After a year and a half on the road in support of their self-titled album, look for Jim Adkins, Rick Burch, Zach Lind and Tom Linton to take a bit of time off and possibly head back into the studio to work on new material.
Doors open at 6 p.m. for this Friday's show, and the Haunted Pines will start things off at 7 p.m. Tickets for the all-ages show are $20; head over to Tower Records, Cheapo Music, 808 Skate or any Foodland location to buy tickets. Call 526-4400 to charge by phone ...
THE LOVELY LADIES of Sisters in Sound are approaching their first anniversary at Auntie Pasto's in Kapahulu later this month, and what better way to celebrate than starting up another party? This Saturday (and every second Saturday of the month thereafter), head down to Indigo for "Escape." DJs Zita and Chia kick things off this weekend for the 21-and-over crowd, and there's no charge to get in ...
