Murder suspect Christopher Clayburn Aki pleaded not guilty today to a 2001 firearms charge via video conference from the Oahu Community Correctional Center. Murder suspect pleads
not guilty in gun case
Star-BulletinAki, 20, was indicted Jan. 21 for allegedly carrying a firearm and not confining it as required by law on Aug. 14-15, 2001. Trial was set for April 27.
Aki already is being held in lieu of $5 million bail on an unrelated charge of second-degree murder stemming from the death in December of his girlfriend's 11-year-old half sister, Kahealani Indreginal.
Aki has a trial date this month on that charge but the trial is likely to be postponed. His attorney, deputy public defender Todd Eddins, has said that the complexity and the publicity surrounding the case likely would cause delays.
Indreginal disappeared from her Makalapa housing complex on Dec. 10. Her body was found three days later near an Aiea trail, after an intensive search that included pleas to the public for information on the case.
Police said Aki confessed to killing Indreginal and witnesses told police they saw him with her in a car before she disappeared.
