Inoue decides to
resume title quest


Egan Inoue will come out of retirement to face Yukiya Naito of Japan in the main event of SuperBrawl XXVIII Feb. 8 at the Blaisdell Arena.

If Inoue can overcome the bigger Naito, he would be one match away from taking on current Shooto World Champion Masanori Suda.

"When I retired I said the only way I would be back was for a shot at the Shooto title and now I've got that opportunity," Egan said.

Falaniko Vitale will put his unbeaten record against UFC veteran Tyrone Roberts on the undercard. Other matches include Ray Serailles vs. Andre Roberts, Ron Jhun vs. Mike Panalber, Kola Koka vs. Mark Moreno and Andy Wang vs. Deshaun Johnson.

Seasiders climb regional poll

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team moved up a spot to No. 4 in the NCAA Div. II West Regional rankings yesterday, settling in right behind No. 3 Hawaii-Hilo.

The Seasiders are 10-2 this season and will host the 12-5 Vulcans tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Humboldt State (15-1) is currently in the top spot followed by Cal State San Bernardino (11-4).

Hawaii Pacific fell out of the top 10 after losing at BYUH.

Hawaii Pearl Open tees off in February

The 25th Hawaii Pearl Open, which features an international field of 212, will be played Feb. 8-10 at the Pearl Country Club.

The $80,000 purse is the richest prize of any locally run tournament, with professionals playing for $77,500 and amateurs competing for $2,500 in merchandise certificates.

David Ishii and Greg Meyer head the list of local pros in the tournament, joined by past champions Lance Suzuki and Kevin Hayashi.

Michelle Wie failed to make the cut last year but is expected to compete this year along with Jonathan Ota and Joe Phensavath.

Marathon to air Sunday on KHNL

A half-hour recap of December's Honolulu Marathon will air Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on KHNL.

Kenya's Mbarak Hussein won the race by four seconds over countryman Jimmy Muindi to win the men's race and Russian Svetlana Zakharova won the women's race for the first time since 1997 by outrunning fellow Russian Albina Ivanova on the climb up Diamond head.

Ko Olina hosts race around the world

Ko Olina Resort & Marina will host the Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race, a fleet of eight identical racing yachts sponsored by international cities, traveling over 35,000 nautical miles.

Known as the Ko Olina Cup, the Clipper yachts are enroute from the Galapagos Islands to Oahu on the longest leg of the worldwide race. The leaders are expected to arrive this weekend.

Division II top performers

>> Alexus Foyle, Brigham Young-Hawaii basketball: The senior from Canouan, St. Vincent was the PacWest player of the week for the second straight week after leading the Seasiders to a comeback win over Hawaii Pacific. Foyle scored 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

>> Marvin Noble, Hawaii Pacific basketball: The junior point guard was perfect from beyond the 3-point line in the Sea Warriors' 84-76 loss at Laie, scoring 30 points and grabbing four steals. Noble outscored Foyle, the conference's leading scorer, to move up to third on the conference's list. He is fifth in steals with an average of 1.82 per game.
