5-year-old’s bite from
non-neutered dog
is not atypical

WAILUKU >> The male mixed-breed pit bull dog that attacked a 5-year-old boy in Kihei was not neutered, and that follows a national trend, Maui County animal control supervisor Aimee Anderson said.

Anderson said nationally, 90 percent of all dog bites are committed by dogs that are not spayed or neutered and that 80 percent of them are male dogs.

"It really does say something for dogs who are spayed or neutered," Anderson said.

She said while pit bulls are among the several breeds of dogs that cause the most damage from a bite, Dalmatians and cocker spaniels are the breeds that have the greatest propensity to bite.

Trevor Sifton, 5, was recuperating at home from multiple bites from the pit bull after the dog jumped over a fence and attacked him on a walkway in Kihei Villages on Monday night.

Maui animal control officials plan to cite the Kihei dog owner under a county dangerous-dog law that allows between a $50 and $500 fine but no jail time.

The owner turned over the dog, named George, to the Maui Humane Society after the attack. The dog was destroyed Wednesday.
