Before the start of last night's big game between Castle and Kaimuki, Bulldogs football coach Eric Rhinelander was recognized by KSSK radio for his work on and off the field as the Kaimuki defensive coordinator. Bulldogs end

Castle’s streakBy Marc Dixon
Special to the Star-BulletinBefore the night was over, Kaimuki coach Stephen Lee and his boys proved to the home crowd that Bulldogs basketball also knows a thing or two about defense.
Utilizing an extended matchup zone, the Bulldogs were able to keep the Knights out of any offensive rhythm in the first half, building an 11-point lead before the break and winning 47-34.
"They were playing pretty good defense tonight," said Castle coach Rocky Fraticelli. "We worked a lot on trying to break their zone during practice, but we couldn't find the open gaps during the game, we weren't reading it correct."
Midway through the second quarter, a Nick Milan up-and-under windmill scoop shot gave the Bulldogs a commanding 24-9 lead. So stifling was the Kaimuki defense, the visiting Knights were held under 10 points until an Emmett "Doonie" Aberilla left-hander closed the deficit to 24-11 with a little more than five minutes left in the half.
Aside from suffocating the Castle shooters, Kaimuki also limited the Knights' number of shots while managing to provide additional opportunities for themselves. Kaimuki collected 12 offensive rebounds in the first half, with Daniel Tautofi corralling four, the same number as the entire Castle team.
"Their size was a big concern to us coming in," Fraticelli said. "Trying to keep them off the boards, they killed us in the first half with offensive rebounding."
In the second half a familiar scenario repeated itself for the Bulldogs as Tautofi was stricken with foul trouble, allowing the Knights back into the game.
"It comes back to the same thing," Lee said. "Daniel gets into trouble and the rest of the guys don't have the confidence to keep the run going. I stress this all the time, we need other guys to step up."
Led by Aberilla and William Harvest, who led the Knight attack with 13 and eight points, respectively, Castle outscored the home team 14-9 in the third and pulled to within four on an Aberilla put-back.
In the fourth quarter, following a Charles Teixeira free throw, the Knights closed to six points but couldn't get closer as Nick Milan scored five of his 11 points in 42 seconds to ice the game for Kaimuki.
"Nick's been playing a lot better," Lee said. "He's coming around, he had a slow start and he helps when Daniel is out and Jimmy (Miyasaka) is struggling, but they all need to step up or we're going to struggle."
The Kaimuki victory handed Castle its first loss of the season. Previously undefeated Roosevelt also lost last night to Kalaheo, creating three teams with one loss at the top of the OIA East and setting up a huge game next Wednesday as Castle meets Roosevelt.
"Tonight makes this Friday's game even more important," Fraticelli said. "But like I told the guys with seven seconds left, this kind of game, forget about it and move on. We'll move on."
