Afoa an All-American
Saint Louis defensive lineman Wilson Afoa has been named to the Student Sports Senior All-America team.
Afoa was among the 12 defensive linemen selected to the All-America team recognizing the nation's top seniors. Student Sports picked 30 offensive players, 30 defensive players and 15 special teams/multi-purpose players for the team.
"It's a tremendous honor and I'd like to thank my teammates and coaches," Afoa said.
Afoa, 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds, was the Star-Bulletin's All-State Defensive Player of the Year after helping Saint Louis capture the state championship in December. He led the Crusaders with 19 tackles for losses, including 6 1/2 sacks, in 15 games.
Afoa is being recruited by Hawaii, Washington and Washington State.
Heisman winner pulls out of Hula Bowl
Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer has decided to not make an appearance at next Saturday's Hula Bowl Maui, said Dick Schaller, the game's executive director. It was known Palmer was not going to play, but he was invited to be recognized at the game because of the Hula Bowl's working relationship with the Downtown Athletic Club, the organization that awards the trophy.
"His agent didn't want him to come," Schaller said. "He put together a workout for him (for scouts) that would conflict with the Hula Bowl."
Schaller said several other past Heisman winners will attend, including Ty Detmer (Brigham Young, 1990), George Rogers (South Carolina, 1980), Johnny Rodgers (Nebraska, 1972), Mike Rozier (Nebraska, 1983), Howard "Hop Along" Cassady (Ohio State, 1955) and John Lujack (Notre Dame, 1947).
