Charlot dedication

A dedication ceremony at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in Saunders Hall at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, will welcome Jean Charlot's mural, "Night Hula," to the campus.

The 9-by-15 foot mural, depicting an ancient hula scene, was created as a private commission for a law office in Waikiki. When building renovations were required in 1991, the mural was donated to Kamehameha Schools.

The mural was severely damaged during a storm. The school raised funds to have the mural restored, and the Jean Charlot Foundation, in charge of the restoration, donated the mural to the UH.

The artist arrived in Hawaii in 1949 to create a mural for Bachman Hall. Charlot joined the art department and created three more murals on campus.

Applications are being accepted for the Miss Downtown Honolulu and Miss Ala Moana Scholarship Pageant, a preliminary to the Miss Hawaii scholarship program and the Miss America organization.

Dish on 'Potter,' 'Rings'

Book fans who have read the books and seen the films "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" or "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" are welcome to participate in "Books Into Film" discussion groups at Kailua Public Library.

The first program, on "Harry Potter," will take place 2:30 p.m. Jan. 28. The second, based on the second book of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic trilogy, takes place at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 4.

The hourlong programs will be conducted by librarian Vicky Dworkin. Participants can share their reactions to the film, discuss what changed in transforming the book into a movie, what they liked and what they wish had been done differently.
