Rivers, Paepule lead
Saint Louis to victory

Maybe Hawaii football coach June Jones is interested in Saint Louis' Jason Rivers and Timo Paepule out of fear. They sure know how to take wins away from Warriors.

In the midst of their football recruiting trips to the University of Hawaii, Rivers and Paepule keyed the Crusaders' 53-45 basketball win at Kamehameha last night.

They combined for seven points in the first three possessions of the third quarter to turn a three-point lead into an eight-point advantage.

Saint Louis improved to 5-1 while the Warriors dropped to 4-2 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Rivers, who orally committed to UH earlier in the day, scored a game-high 16 points. Paepule finished with 13.

"It's a good way for them to spend their recruiting trips," said Delbert Tengan, their head coach in basketball and football. "It just made their good weekend that much better."

The Crusaders led by as many as six points in the third quarter after starting the game down because one of the Crusaders was assessed a technical foul for dunking during warmups.

With post player Wilson Afoa in Samoa to care for his ailing grandmother, it didn't seem like something they could afford to give away. Saint Louis shrugged off the foul and controlled the first half anyway, thanks in part to Paepule's seven points at the half.

The scrappy Warriors wouldn't quit, though, and whittled the lead down to three at the beginning of the final quarter. That's when Rivers and Paepule took over.

"We wanted to execute better offensively and that's how we got some easy buckets," Tengan said. "And we wanted to get the ball to our key players. We wanted Jason and Timo to regain control of the game."

Rivers started the fourth quarter with a long 3-pointer to double the lead, then dished the ball to Paepule in transition after a Kamehameha miss. He drove the lane and scooped in a layup on the Crusaders' next chance to run the lead to eight with 5:45 remaining.

The Crusaders tried to let the Warriors back into the game, shooting only 5-for-12 from the line in the final two minutes. But their defense was as stiff as their free-throw shooting was flimsy. Saint Louis held Kamehameha scoreless in four of its final five possessions, making up for a game in which they committed nine turnovers in the third quarter -- including five in a row -- and allowed Caleb Spencer to drive the lane for 13 points.

But it all came down to the Crusaders' defense when it counted, allowing Kamehameha only three field goals in the final quarter.

"I think defensively we held them to one shot," Tengan said. "It was a shot that was challenged all the time and allowed us to overcome our poor job offensively down the stretch."

But the Crusaders' tight defense was only part of the reason Kamehameha couldn't overcome the gift of poor free-throw shooting by the other side. The Warriors did not shoot well themselves, and had only one day to prepare for one of the state's most athletic teams -- Kamehameha played Punahou on Friday and only had a walk-through yesterday morning to prepare for Saint Louis.

"We're just not a good shooting team," Kamahameha coach Darryl Gabriel said. "If you watch any of our games, we shoot 30 percent from the field and any time someone puts 40 points up on us we're going to have some trouble."
